My love of coffee was initially sparked in Santa Cruz where I worked at a local coffee shop for three years. Coffee is so ingrained in Santa Cruz culture that the beans I used were roasted in the city and a Santa Cruz transplant (Verve Coffee) is considered one of the best in LA. When I graduated college and returned to LA, I was already a coffee nerd.
It was only a matter of time before I invested in professional brewing equipment–a Baratza coffee grinder, Chemex brewer and Hario water heater. Now, my husband and I attend Coffee Con LA every year and get our single origin beans shipped to us monthly from Black Oak Roasters in Ukiah, whose cup taster was just named National Champion. Suffice it to say that I am obsessed with coffee and I will not shell out $5 for a cup unless it’s worth it.
That is why I only go to the best coffee shops in Los Angeles. Problem is, the sheer number of Los Angeles cafes available in each neighborhood is enough to make one’s head spin–and not from lack of caffeine. If you are looking for the best coffee shops in Los Angeles to get your morning or afternoon brew, look no further than this comprehensive guide.
To be included in this list, the coffee shop must be locally founded and operated in Los Angeles (no Blue Bottle or Intelligentsia here), and must have over 4 stars in Google and Yelp reviews (or be personally vetted by me). While I try to visit as many coffee shops as possible, and will continue to visit more and more on this list, it was simply not feasible. The places I have been to include a short tip or suggestion on what to order.
While some of these coffee shops might also be considered restaurants (and many of them make delicious food), they all offer counter service and seating if you want to leisurely lounge about with a latte, with or without a meal. Just find your neighborhood, head to whichever spot on this list of best coffee shops in Los Angeles that piques your interest and savor a delicious brew.
