In honor of International Women’s Day, I set out in search of the countries that have had female presidents, prime ministers or queens, because women make up 49.6% of the world’s population and it is crucial to have equal representation in government. But as I soon realized, the list of countries that have never had a female political leader is even more eye-opening.
Among the countries that have NEVER had a female president, prime minister or queen are Iraq, Somalia, Guatemala, Mali, Afghanistan, Chad and the United States of America. The first six countries on this list are also considered the worst countries for women. Interestingly, India, Pakistan and Sudan (all three of which are also on the list of worst countries for women) have had female leaders.
Compared to a list of the best countries for women, only Austria, Singapore, the Czech Republic and United States have never had a female leader. The countries that are best for women are generally also the best for immigrants, people of color, and LGBTQ+ people, and are ranked as the happiest countries.
Which begs the questions: Are we really as great as we think we are? And isn’t it time for a female president already?!
